Yoga of the Soul

by on Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Despite its title, Yoga of the Soul is not a handbook of yoga poses. The original Veggie-Blog description introduces a spiritual narrative about soulmates, love, free will and the possibility of profound personal connection. The author’s own material identifies the work more fully as Dolphins, Love & Destiny: Yoga of the Soul by Ilona Selke. This distinction matters if you are choosing a book to read or looking for it online.

What is the book really about?

According to the original description, the story explores romantic and spiritual relationships, destiny and the way people interpret extraordinary experiences. It uses language about consciousness and a “time-space matrix” to frame those themes. On her website, Ilona Selke also describes the book as part of her writing about dolphins, relationships and awareness.

These are the author’s spiritual interpretations, not established findings in physics or psychology. A reader can appreciate a personal account without treating its metaphysical claims as measurable scientific facts.

Is this the same as conventional yoga?

Only in a broad philosophical sense. In many traditions, yoga includes ideas about self-understanding and connection, but this particular book is primarily concerned with love and consciousness rather than a sequence of postures. Anyone looking for stretches, strength training or a beginner’s yoga class should choose a practical exercise guide instead.

Who might enjoy it?

Readers who enjoy reflective memoirs, spiritual relationships, unusual experiences and questions about destiny may find the premise intriguing. Readers wanting research-based explanations of relationships, or evidence-based mental health advice, should understand that this is not that kind of book.

How to approach the claims thoughtfully

It is reasonable to ask which parts are personal experience, which are metaphor, and which are claims about the external world. If you want a scientifically grounded overview of meditation, the NIH’s NCCIH summary of meditation and mindfulness is a useful companion. It discusses evidence and limitations without asking readers to accept a particular spiritual worldview.

Yoga in No Time at All by Joel DiGirolamo

by on Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

The techniques in Yoga in No Time at All cost nothing, take little or no time out of your busy day, and take very little energy. This is the ideal book for anyone wishing to have more time in his or her life for yoga and fitness in general.

Joel DiGirolamo began practicing yoga at age 12 when his grandfather died. It was at this time that he discovered the book Yoga and Health by Selvarajan Yesudian and Elisabeth Haich at his grandfather s house. True to the cycle of death and rebirth, the death of his grandfather gave birth to Joel s spiritual and physical awakening. At this early age he mastered yoga poses using only this book for guidance and continued practicing by himself on and off over the years. In 2005 he began an Astanga (Ashtanga) Yoga practice in a classroom setting and currently instructs beginning Astanga Yoga students. He is working on his yoga teacher training certificate and maintains a personal daily yoga practice. While working in the corporate realm much of his day, he became curious as to how he could further incorporate yoga into his daily life – and so the idea of this book was born.

Yoga’s Forgotten Foundation

by on Sunday, June 24th, 2012

A must-read for serious yoga practitioners, meditators and anyone deeply involved with transformative spiritual life, Yoga’s Forgotten Foundation delves into the integrated approach to yoga as taught by the great masters of India. It is a cogent reminder to those who want to start at the end of the spiritual path that there is an essential beginning, the neglect of which portends failure and disappointment. In 224 pages, with full-color Indian art, it explores the traditional foundation of yoga, twenty little-known guidelines on personal ethics, self-control and religious practice, called the yamas and niyamas.
The yamas and niyamas have been preserved through the centuries as the first and second stage of the eight-staged practice of yoga. They provide the essential foundation to support our yoga practice so that attainments in higher consciousness can be sustained.
The book begins with a forward by the author’s spiritual successor, Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami, and takes the reader step by step through noninjury, truthfulness, nonstealing, sexual purity, patience, contentment and other facets of virtue. Grounded in a traditional Hindu point of view, yet admirably relevant to us all, the book discusses some of the toughest issues and challenges of modern life, including promiscuity, domestic abuse, child-rearing, overeating, gambling, vegetarianism, violence, injustice and pornography—relating them all to progress on the yoga path. It also explores the essential practices, including charity, worship, chanting mantras, austerity and scriptural study. 224 pages, full color.

Vayu’s Gate by Orit Sen Gupta

by on Friday, June 22nd, 2012

Vayu’s Gate: Yoga and the Ten Vital Winds by Orit Sen-Gupta explores one of yoga’s less familiar concepts: the vayus, traditionally described as movements or directions of vital energy. This is a book for readers who enjoy the subtler philosophical aspects of yoga and want to explore how those ideas are discussed in relation to posture and breath.

What are the ten vayus?

In traditional yogic frameworks, the vayus are ways of describing the movement of prana, or vital energy. They are not ten anatomical structures that modern medicine can measure. Sen-Gupta presents the concept as a lens for noticing movement, breathing and internal awareness. Readers interested in contemplative practice may find the symbolism useful without treating it as scientific proof.

What is in Vayu’s Gate?

The original description says the book is illustrated and discusses applying the ten vayus to pranayama (breathing practices) and asana (postures). It also frames the author’s work as an investigation of older Sanskrit sources. This is a specialist subject, but the book is presented as accessible to practitioners at different experience levels. That does not mean every exercise is suitable for every reader.

Is the book still available?

There is a particularly helpful update: a book titled Yoga’s Secret Breath: The Ancient Practice of the Ten Vayus is explicitly described as having been previously published under the title Vayu’s Gate. A National Library of Israel record confirms the original title and author.

How should you approach the breathing techniques?

Begin with observation rather than trying to force or hold your breath. Some advanced techniques can cause dizziness or distress, and not all are appropriate for people with cardiopulmonary conditions or during pregnancy. The NCCIH safety guidance recommends appropriate instruction and caution with extreme practices. If a technique feels uncomfortable, stop and return to natural breathing.
