Shameem Akthar Yoga In The Workplace

by on Friday, July 27th, 2012

When most of the day is spent at a desk, making space for movement can be difficult. Yoga in the Workplace by Shameem Akthar offers a practical approach: brief yoga-inspired movements that can fit around a workstation without requiring a studio or a full workout session.

What is the book designed to do?

The original description says the exercises were created for people with long working hours, but may also suit homemakers and older adults who spend extended periods sitting. Rather than insisting on a complicated programme, it focuses on ways to use limited space and time. Retailer descriptions mention clear instructions and illustrations.

Why interrupt long sitting periods?

Regular physical activity matters, but long spells without movement deserve attention too. The World Health Organization’s physical activity guidance advises limiting sedentary time and explains that some activity is better than none. That does not mean a few stretches can cancel all the effects of sitting; it means small breaks can form part of a healthier daily routine.

What could a simple desk break look like?

You could stand up, walk a short distance, gently roll your shoulders or move your wrists and ankles. If the space permits, a comfortable standing side stretch or a slow change of position may be helpful. The aim is to move without pain, not to force dramatic poses in office clothing.

Who is the author?

The book is attributed to yoga teacher Shameem Akthar. Some bibliographic listings spell the surname Akhtar; the ISBN 9789380032825 provides a more dependable way of matching the book than spelling alone. The title is associated with Westland/Tranquebar editions from around 2009–2010.

Is it still for sale?

Retailers currently list paperback copies of Yoga in the Workplace. Availability and shipping vary by seller and country, so check the precise edition before ordering.

Yoga in No Time at All by Joel DiGirolamo

by on Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

The techniques in Yoga in No Time at All cost nothing, take little or no time out of your busy day, and take very little energy. This is the ideal book for anyone wishing to have more time in his or her life for yoga and fitness in general.

Joel DiGirolamo began practicing yoga at age 12 when his grandfather died. It was at this time that he discovered the book Yoga and Health by Selvarajan Yesudian and Elisabeth Haich at his grandfather s house. True to the cycle of death and rebirth, the death of his grandfather gave birth to Joel s spiritual and physical awakening. At this early age he mastered yoga poses using only this book for guidance and continued practicing by himself on and off over the years. In 2005 he began an Astanga (Ashtanga) Yoga practice in a classroom setting and currently instructs beginning Astanga Yoga students. He is working on his yoga teacher training certificate and maintains a personal daily yoga practice. While working in the corporate realm much of his day, he became curious as to how he could further incorporate yoga into his daily life – and so the idea of this book was born.

Yoga’s Forgotten Foundation

by on Sunday, June 24th, 2012

A must-read for serious yoga practitioners, meditators and anyone deeply involved with transformative spiritual life, Yoga’s Forgotten Foundation delves into the integrated approach to yoga as taught by the great masters of India. It is a cogent reminder to those who want to start at the end of the spiritual path that there is an essential beginning, the neglect of which portends failure and disappointment. In 224 pages, with full-color Indian art, it explores the traditional foundation of yoga, twenty little-known guidelines on personal ethics, self-control and religious practice, called the yamas and niyamas.
The yamas and niyamas have been preserved through the centuries as the first and second stage of the eight-staged practice of yoga. They provide the essential foundation to support our yoga practice so that attainments in higher consciousness can be sustained.
The book begins with a forward by the author’s spiritual successor, Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami, and takes the reader step by step through noninjury, truthfulness, nonstealing, sexual purity, patience, contentment and other facets of virtue. Grounded in a traditional Hindu point of view, yet admirably relevant to us all, the book discusses some of the toughest issues and challenges of modern life, including promiscuity, domestic abuse, child-rearing, overeating, gambling, vegetarianism, violence, injustice and pornography—relating them all to progress on the yoga path. It also explores the essential practices, including charity, worship, chanting mantras, austerity and scriptural study. 224 pages, full color.
