The Doctrine and Practice of Yoga by Swami Mukerji

by on Saturday, July 7th, 2012

The Doctrine and Practice of Yoga by Swami A. P. Mukerji is a compact early twentieth-century guide to mental discipline and yogic philosophy. The original book description highlights concentration exercises, questions about illusion and consciousness, the role of the guru and the mysterious idea of will-force. It is a very different proposition from today’s photograph-heavy yoga manuals.

Why is concentration so important in this book?

The text distinguishes between concentration directed at outward tasks and attention turned inward. Mukerji treats the ability to focus as something that can be developed through deliberate practice. The emphasis is on training awareness, not on achieving a demanding physical posture.

What do the older terms mean?

Readers will encounter maya, often translated in philosophical discussion as illusion or the deceptive appearance of reality, along with ideas about the student–teacher relationship. The book also reflects the vocabulary and assumptions of its historical period. Rather than applying every instruction literally, it helps to read these passages as part of an older spiritual tradition.

Who should read it?

This is most suitable for readers interested in historical yoga writing, philosophical approaches to attention and comparisons between classical and contemporary yoga. A newcomer looking for physical practice or modifications for an injury will need a more modern guide.

Is concentration practice always harmless?

Not necessarily. Most people can experiment with brief, comfortable periods of quiet attention, but strong or distressing experiences are a reason to stop. The NCCIH summary of meditation and mindfulness explains that adverse experiences can occur. A book about will-force should not be taken as a promise of supernatural powers or a substitute for health care.

Where can I find the original text?

The complete work is available free through Project Gutenberg. Printed and digital commercial reprints also exist, but their layout and quality vary. Checking the free text first is sensible if you are unfamiliar with the author.
