Annie Wood Besant by Annie Wood Besant

Sometimes the title on an old blog post is not the title of the book itself. This post was originally labelled “Annie Wood Besant by Annie Wood Besant,” but the quoted introduction belongs to An Introduction to Yoga by Annie Besant. The text is based on lectures presented in Benares in 1907 and published in book form in the early twentieth century.

What is An Introduction to Yoga?

Besant set out to give readers a foundation for approaching the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Rather than offering a contemporary fitness routine, she discusses consciousness, concentration, the purpose of yoga and the philosophical questions she believed a serious student should consider. The result is a historical work of spiritual interpretation.

Why does its historical setting matter?

Annie Besant was active in the Theosophical movement, and the lectures reflect that background. Their language and assumptions belong to a particular intellectual and religious conversation of the period. Reading the book can show how yoga was presented to audiences beyond its Indian source traditions, but Besant’s interpretation should not be mistaken for the only authoritative description of those traditions.

Is it useful to modern yoga students?

For readers interested in the history of yoga ideas, yes. It offers a window into how thinkers discussed Patanjali more than a century ago. Readers looking for pose illustrations, injury modifications or practical lessons for a first class will need a different kind of book. The NCCIH overview offers a short contemporary description of the physical, breathing and meditative elements of yoga.

Where can you read it today?

One advantage of this title is that a legitimate digital text is freely available through Project Gutenberg. That page provides several e-reader formats. Print reprints and other editions are also listed by booksellers, but the exact wording, layout and scholarly notes can differ between editions.

Approach it as historical reading, with curiosity about its time and context, rather than as a source of medical or exercise advice.
